Children’s Christmas Cookie Decorating

4th Annual Children’s Cookie Decorating Event

We hosted the 4th annual children’s Christmas Cookie Decorating Event here at Upachaya back in December.  This event is well attended each year by the children in the barrio that is next to Upachaya, as well as the children of our employees.  This is one of my favorite events that we host each year.

img_5043This year we had fewer children then in years past due to fewer children living in the barrio next to Upachaya.  However, we still had 17 children in attendance.  A nice number and manageable.  In preparation for our event, I baked 46 dozen sugar cookies.

I did receive a bit of help in cutting out those cookies from Victor’s (my Caretaker and Employee Extraordinaire), children.  Daryi, Josue, and Daryielli are very special to me.  They’ve grown up on Upachaya and essentially I view them as my Honduran Grandchildren.  They love to assist in many projects and you see in these pictures they certainly enjoyed cutting out those cookies.

The day of the event, each child receives a dozen cookies to decorate however they choose.  We provide the colored frostings, the colored sugar sprinkles, nonpareils, skittles, marshmallows, and other such items.  I think more marshmallows are eaten by our little cookie decorators then end up on the cookies, but that is OK as well.  We also provide them milk so if they choose to eat a cookie or two while they are creating their masterpieces, they have something to wash them down with.

This year given I had baked so many cookies, the children were provided more than 1 dozen cookies each.

Although when asked some of the children didn’t want more than 1 dozen.  In any case, the option is theirs and as you can see by the pictures the children all walk away with smiles, and some on a little sugar high as well!

This event is special for me because I know the children from this barrio.  I know the conditions in which many of them live.  Many are living in homes without stoves.  Their families cook their meals on a clay oven that they’ve created that sits outside of their home.

So, to have cookies is a huge treat to them, especially since they have free rein to decorate them as they see fit.

A huge thank you goes out to a dear friend, Judy Brownfield as well for her assistance with the children during this magical day. She has such a great sense of humor and the children adore her.

So, until next year, we’ll keep trying to delight the children and keep smiles on their faces.
