Detoxification for your Body

Fall is an excellent time to consider detoxifying your body. Just as we get our garden beds ready for winter, so too, should we prepare our bodies. People now carry within their bodies a modern-day chemical cocktail derived from industrial chemicals, pesticides, food additives, heavy metals, antibiotics, plus the residues of pharmaceuticals and legal and illegal drugs. Each year people are exposed to thousands of toxic chemicals and pollutants in the Earth’s atmosphere, water, food and soil. These toxins manifest themselves in the body in a variety of symptoms, including decreased immune function, neurotoxicity, hormonal dysfunction, psychological or mood disturbances, and even cancer. Detox therapy helps to rid the body of chemicals and pollutants and can facilitate a return to health.

Our bodies are constantly working to detoxify and rid our systems of toxins via the liver, kidneys, lungs, as well as eliminating toxins through our urine, feces, and sweat. Yet due to the chemical cocktails within us, it often times puts our body under stress to dispel all the toxins.

It is estimated that 69 million Americans live in areas that exceed smog standards, most drinking water contains over 700 chemicals, including excessive levels of lead, some 3000 chemicals are added to our food supply and another 10,000 or more chemicals, are in solvents, emulsifiers, and preservatives used in food processing and storage which can stay in our body for years.

A body with a healthy immune system, efficiently processing organs, and nervous system can handle a great deal of toxicity. But if the body is damaged from chronic exposure to environmental pollutants, restoring these functions, organs and systems can be accomplished through detox, including fasting, chelation, and nutritional, herbal and homeopathic methods which accelerate the body’s own natural cleansing process.

Forms of Detox
– Fasting – this is the fastest, most inexpensive and effective ways to detox. Short fasts can be 24 hours, and up t 5 days. Longer fasts should only be done under supervision from your medical professional.
– Detox diets – consuming only veggies and fruit, fresh sprouts, grains, and avoiding wheat. This approach to detoxing will help eliminate many toxins from the body and provide an abundance of vitamins and minerals along the way which will boost your immune system.

Following is a liver flush I like to do a couple of times a year. I do this in the Spring, and again in the Fall.
It keeps your liver functioning well. The healthy and efficient functioning of the liver is central to detoxification and disease prevention, which explains why it is advisable to periodically flush the organ clean using natural substances. Liver flushes stimulate the elimination of wastes from the body, cook and open the liver to increase bile flow, and improve overall liver function.

♦ Citrus Juice – Squeeze enough fresh lemons or limes to produce one cup of juice. A small amount of distilled or spring water may be added to dilute the juice, but the more sour it tastes; the better it will perform as a liver cleanser. Orange and grapefruit juices may also be used, provided they are mixed with l lemon or lime juice.
♦ Garlic and Ginger – To the citrus juice mixture, add the juice of 1-2 cloves of garlic, freshly squeezed in a garlic press, and a small amount of freshly grated raw ginger juice. Grate the raw ginger on a cheese or vegetable grater, then put the shreds into a garlic press and squeeze out the juice.
♦ Olive Oil – Add one tablespoon of high-quality olive oil (such as extra virgin) to the citrus, garlic, and ginger juice. Either blend or shake the ingredients to guarantee complete mixing.
♦ Drink the Flush – It is best to take this concoction first thing in the morning, preferably after some stretching and breathing exercise. Do not eat any foods for one hour following the flush.
♦ Cleansing Herbal Tea – After an hour has elapsed, it is recommended to take two cups of an herbal tea blend. It consists of dry portions of fennel (1 part), flax (1 part), burdock (1/4 part), fenugreek (1 part), licorice (1/4 part), and peppermint (1 part). Simmer the herbs (except the peppermint) for 20 minutes, then add the peppermint and steep for ten minutes. For convenience you may prepare several quarts of the tea in advance.

It is best if you do this flush for two complete cycles. A cycle consists of ten consecutive days of taking the flush ingredients, followed by three days off, then another ten days on.

Fennel seed is sweet in taste, carminative, and aromatic. It strengthens the digestion, freshens the breath, reduces gas, and relives lower abdominal pain.

Flax is sweet and sour in taste and warming in action. It nourishes and moistens cell membranes and reduces inflammation.

Burdock is bitter and slightly pungent in taste and cooling in action. It improves digestive, liver and bowel functions, reduces heat and inflammation, and helps detoxify poisons. It also heals the skin.

Licorice is sweet in taste and cooling in action. It detoxifies poisons from the blood and liver and reduces general inflammation and pain. It moistens and heals the lungs and digestive tract. Licorice should not be used during pregnancy.

Peppermint is sweet in taste and cooling in action. It cools and soothes the throat, lungs, stomach and mind.

Garlic is pungent in taste and warming in action. It penetrates deeply into the system to protect the internal organs and vessels against infection and blockage. It moves the blood and aids in digestion of fats and oils. It is one of the most effective anti-microbial herbs, with antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. It strengthens the immune system and has anticancer effects and is highly effective in killing parasites.

Ginger is pungent in taste and is warming and mildly tonic in action. It improves digestion, reduces nausea, settles the stomach, and reduces inflammation. It also acts as a peripheral blood circulation stimulant.
